The rock climbing opportunities in Utah are as varied and abundant as any climber could wish. From shale, granite and quartzite to redrock, sandstone and limestone, from hidden canyons to dramatic boulder fields, there are hundreds of climbs perfect for every climber, novice and elite alike.
Logan Canyon in Northern Utah, for example, boasts over 400 bolted routes, including one of Utah's highest-rated routes. The quartzite climbs in Big Cottonwood Canyon, the granite climbs in Little Cottonwood Canyon, and the cobblestone routes in Maple Canyon offer some of the best climbing in the country and perhaps the world. The Uinta Mountains have three major summer bouldering areas, while the Capitol Reef National Park has six climbing clusters and is one of Utah's year-round bouldering areas. Other climbs and climbing areas include Escalante Grand Staircase, Robber's Roost, the Valley of Fire, the Medieval Chamber, Pandora's Box and Dragonfly Canyon.
And those are just a tiny sampling of what's available throughout the state's five national parks, seven national monuments, two national recreation areas, and six national forests. Serious climbers from around the globe come to Utah to experience world-class climbs, while beginners flock to the parks to scramble around boulder fields while enjoying electric-blue skies and incomparable scenery.
