Pascal's basic equations FORCE = PRESSURE x AREA means the only way to increase Aspiration Force, if pressure is limited to 14.7psi, is to increase the size of the syringe barrel. However, it takes significantly more user force to pull back the plunger and aspirate with standard syringes often requiring two hands. Using two-hands to aspirate reduces clinical control for the procedure and prevents them from using their second hand to stabilize or operate an imaging device.
Aspirator's design includes handles connected to an integrated syringe barrel and plunger that pull the plunger back when the handles are squeezed eliminating the need for two hands to power significant aspiration force. The VELLO Biopsy Aspirator is built off the basic Aspirator platform and adds new proprietary features to improve biopsy safety and effectiveness.
"Adding features to improve biopsy efficacy is a natural evolution for the Aspirator platform," said Shawn Fojtik, Control's Chief Executive Officer. "The VELLO Biopsy Aspirator will allow clinicians to aspirate with one-hand while their other hand controls an imaging probe, catheter, biopsy needle, or other related device. The VELLO Biopsy Aspirator also allows the clinician to immediately increase or decrease aspiration force in line with anatomic requirements."
Disposable syringes are used worldwide in millions of procedures per year to assist in blood clot removal; biopsy; drainage of abscesses, cysts, and plural effusions; and other procedures. The Aspirator platform is open ended with universal connectors in a variety of barrel sizes that are compatible with multiple catheters, needles, and related medical devices.
Aspiration is developing a family of Aspirator devices for aspiration, biopsy, and other applications where fluids are aspirated through small devices to diagnose, treat, or enable other medical devices.
The VELLO Biopsy Aspirator is expected to be available for commercial sale in 2009 pending FDA registration.
