Though Dr. Willem Kolff is a larger-than-life figure in the global medical device arena, widely known as the “father of artificial organs,” he is lesser known among the general public in Utah.
It began with a poster. On that poster was a 12-month calendar, cartoonish characters engaged in skiing, rock climbing and other outdoor pursuits, and the names of 250 of Utah’s 5,200-plus high tech companies listed in the Salt Lake and Cache valleys. Winding like a river, Interstate 15 runs through it. The first edition was printed in January 2007; the second, one-year later. A redesign is due out in 2009.

The state's image and that of its high-tech sector are among the challenges the industry here faces when trying to recruit talented engineers and top managers, as well as to entice venture capital. And that, in part, is what motivated Omniture CEO Josh James to launch an initiative to more positively brand the state's burgeoning high-tech industry.
